Characteristics of OG Kush
OG Kush is a well-known indica strain that has remained a favourite of the cannabis community for some time, for good reason. OG Kush was created with the intention of being one of the most potent strains at the time with a high that was more desirable over other strains. OG Kush users report feeling happy and euphoric, as well as hungry and relaxed after smoking, OG has a high THC content of around 27%, the flavours when smoked are woody and citrus and the aroma is citrus and pine. OG’s buds are heavily coated with trichomes and generally are green-yellow coloured with short orange pistils.
When was OG Kush created?
OG Kush is a hybrid strain which was created in Florida in 1995 when Josh Del Rosso asked his friend Matt Berger to prove that Florida could create cannabis that was as good as Los Angeles cannabis, Matt accepted the challenge and soon went on to develop one of the most popular strains of cannabis, OG Kush.
How was OG Kush created?
After Matt decided to accept this challenge to create a strain of cannabis that matched or exceeded any strain in Los Angeles he got to work. He used an unknown strain from Northern California and combined it with Hindu Kush, Lemon Thai and Chemdawg (Chemdog), Matt intended to create a new cannabis strain that possessed the most desirable qualities from each of the strains.
Hindu Kush characteristics
Hindi or Hindu Kush is one of the landrace strains used to develop OG Kush. It originates in mountainous areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The strain has a THC content of approximately 20%, the high is described as a calm, relaxing and euphoric, it can also relieve symptoms of stress, nausea and pain. The buds are generally on the larger side and dense, the buds are green but can also display purple shades, along with a thick coating of silver trichomes. Hindu Kush has the aroma of sandalwood and pine with earthy undertones and users have reported pine flavours when smoked.
Lemon Thai characteristics
Lemon Thai is a hybrid strain that was used to create OG Kush, the origin of this strain is not very clear but some sources believe the strain was developed using a Thai sativa strain and an unknown Hawaiian strain. Lemon Thai has a THC content of around 20% and there is limited knowledge on the indica to sativa ratios. Users that smoke lemon Thai can expect to feel alert, euphoric and creative with flavours and aromas of lemon and mint. The buds are often wispy and pale green-brown in colour.
Chemdawg (Chemdog) characteristics
Chemdogs history is also not very clear, it is however thought to be a hybrid of Thai and Nepalese sativa landraces. It has a standard THC content of around 20%, its buds are medium sized and generally on the longer and thinner side, the sticky buds are covered in trichomes which give a silver appearance as well as orange pistils. Its high has been described as relaxing and calming with users experiencing hyper awareness, the aroma is earthy and can smell of pine, whereas the flavour has been described as earthy and ammonia like, known to leave a tang in the user’s mouth. Chemdog is known as a potent cannabis strain.
Matt Berger combined the above strains to create OG Kush, taking the most desirable qualities from each of the strains to create a cannabis strain more potent than ever before.

Can’t any cannabis strain be called Kush?
You may have heard the word Kush being used to describe many strains of cannabis, however, not all strains are actually related to OG Kush. It has become increasingly popular for Kush to be used as a slang phrase to describe high grade cannabis, similar to the incorrect use of ‘skunk’. If in doubt reference the strains above for genuine Kush strains.
